Natural Deodorants
Newspaper and magazine articles in recent years have suggested that aluminium salts present in underarm deodorants and anti-perspirants may contribute to the risk of breast cancer. Several of the reports were based on a study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology 2006.
The fact that deodorants containing these salts are applied and left on the skin so close to the breast makes this a particular concern, especially after shaving as this makes it even easier for aluminium salts to enter the bloodstream. Other studies have also suggested that aluminium salts can penetrate the skin even if it is unbroken.
Anti-perspirants work by clogging, closing or blocking the pores that release sweat under your arms – the active ingredient aluminium salts being in many products. Its salts act as a sweat inhibitor, closing off the skin’s sweat pores. It is not ideal to close off the body’s most important secretory organ (sweating from the armpits included), particularly with a substance that can be irritating to the skin and is easily absorbed by damaged skin.
Although many articles have been written on this subject, there appears to be no clear evidence to prove or disprove the link between aluminium salts and breast cancer. But personally I feel if there is any suggestion at all, why take the risk?
Mellow essentials
This roll-on deodorant uses raw ingredients which
- kill the bacteria which gives sweat its odour and
- does not close the pores and so does not prevent the secretion of sweat.
One of the ingredients I use is found naturally in cherries. It reduces the bacteria on the skin by making it more acid. This product can be used by men and women and is effective for up to 12 hours.
I also use essential oils such as bergamot, spike lavender, lemon, geranium and benzoin to produce a lovely aroma for your skin in perhaps the area where you need it most.
